How to Ensure the Quality of Manufactured Sand

How to Ensure the Quality of Manufactured Sand

Manufactured sand is produced by sand-making equipment. Today’s manufactured sand can match, and in some cases even exceed, the quality of natural sand. High-quality manufactured sand requires not only advanced equipment but also premium raw materials, a reasonable and well-organized production process, proper equipment configuration, and reliable supporting systems for feeding, conveying, screening, and washing. Only when all these elements work together can the plant produce top-grade manufactured sand. So, how can we ensure its quality?

1. Control the Quality of Raw Materials

Not all materials are suitable for producing manufactured sand. The raw material should be free of potential alkali–aggregate reactivity and have a compressive strength of at least 80 MPa. Choose clean, hard, durable rock without soft particles or weathered surfaces. Before production, sample and test the parent rock for compressive strength, rock type, and the content of sulfides and sulfates to ensure it meets standards.

Commonly used raw materials include pebble, river pebble, sandstone, quartzite, and basalt. Selecting the right parent material lays the foundation for high-quality manufactured sand.

2. Choose the Right Production Process

Manufactured sand is usually produced on a complete production line, which increases efficiency and output. A typical line combines multiple machines, such as a feeder, crusher, sand maker, conveyor, vibrating screen, and sand washer. The configuration can be adjusted according to production needs.

Different regions may require different processing methods. For example:

  • In cold, dry northern regions, dry sand-making is often preferred.

  • In humid, water-rich southern regions, wet sand-making is more suitable.

3. Control Particle Gradation, Fineness Modulus, Clay Content, and Stone Powder Content

  • Particle gradation: Adjust the feed gradation, feed rate, crusher speed, and screen size to achieve optimal particle distribution.

  • Clay content: Add washing and dewatering stages to clean coarse aggregates and reduce clay content to meet standards.

  • Fineness modulus: Reduce the feed rate or adjust feed particle size to control the fineness modulus of the finished sand.

  • Stone powder content: Use fans and dust collection systems to remove excess stone powder. Adjust the dust collector power to control airflow, and thus, the powder content. Installing a sand washer below the sand-making machine—such as a wheel-type washer—can remove excess stone powder, soil, and impurities for more stable sand quality.

By controlling raw material quality, optimizing the production process, and precisely managing gradation and cleanliness, manufacturers can produce high-quality manufactured sand that meets construction standards and market demands.
